Research Technology Governance Subcommittee
The Research Technology Subcommittee is part of a broader Technology Governance framework.
The Research Technology Subcommittee provides strategic direction and university-level coordination for the technologies and infrastructure that support research across disciplines. Bringing forward the diverse perspectives and needs of researchers—whether their work relies on advanced computing, discipline-specific applications, specialized software, or modest technological support—the subcommittee ensures that research technology planning is inclusive, intentional, and aligned with institutional priorities.
The subcommittee will work alongside the Research Technology and Services Leadership Table, a collection of IT leaders who are tasked with providing the technical capabilities to meet the committee’s goals.
Over time, the committee will:
- Ensure that research technology strategies and priorities align with the university’s research mission and institutional priorities.
- Enable collaborative engagement of deans, research leaders, faculty, researchers, and technology providers in shaping research technology directions.
- Coordinate research technology efforts across campus units to maximize efficiency, minimize duplication, leverage shared investments, and simplify the researcher experience.
- Recommend, rationalize, and provide guidance on research technology investments and their impact across the research lifecycle.
- Review and advance proposals for research technology services and initiatives to the Executive Committee.
- Support the identification and management of risks related to research technologies, including data security, compliance, sustainability, and budget implications.
- Monitor for and assist in coordination with other relevant subcommittees, in particular the AI Technology Infrastructure committee where significant joint effort may be appropriate.
Portfolio
Research technology resources and services overseen by the subcommittee cover all tools, support and investments that support research. Examples include, but are not limited to:
- Research computing and advanced computing infrastructure (e.g., high-performance computing, cloud computing)
- Research data infrastructure and management (e.g., repositories, storage, data platforms, data sharing tools)
- Discipline-specific research applications and software
- Research software licensing and access
- Data analysis, visualization, and modeling tools
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies for research
- Research cyberinfrastructure and security
- Research collaboration platforms and tools
- Support systems across the research lifecycle (e.g., proposal development, project execution, dissemination)
